Medbourne 20mph Speed Limit Proposal

It has been suggested that Medbourne could benefit from a 20mph speed limit.

While we reside well to the east of Offa's Dyke, the recent experience in Wales has been instructive (for and against 20mph limits). For the uninitiated, the Welsh Government introduced a default 20mph speed limit on restricted roads across Wales in September 2023. The Welsh government is now conducting a review to make sure it is "targeted on the right roads" and are asking the public for suggestions in a recognition they may not have got it right across the whole country. Nevertheless, the Welsh Government maintain that "[they] believe that 20mph is right, it will save lives and reduce collisions and injuries".

Before your Parish Council embarks on applying for a 20mph limit…or not, we would like to gauge opinion and invite you to use the Parish Council 'contact us' form to [ https://www.medbourneparishcouncil.gov.uk/contact-us] to express your opinion. Please start your message either:

  • 'Medbourne 20 mph limit – FOR' or
  • 'Medbourne 20mph limit – AGAINST'
  • Please respond by 30 November 2024.
  • Provide your name and address so we know you live in Medbourne!
  • If you are aware of individuals unable to access the website and want to 'vote' they can drop a note into the post office where they will be collected for the Parish Council.

….and feel free to provide further comments such as if not applied to the whole village, where? Please spread the word as the more people we get to reply the more leverage (representative % of the community) we will have in either justifying doing nothing or trying to persuade Leicestershire County Council (LCC) Highways to do something. Please manage your expectations with regard to any potential change as we continue to struggle with LCC with recent and proposed adjustments with our existing 30 and 40 mph signs. Also, we are aware of the ongoing debate regarding the ability to enforce and prosecute within a 20 mph limit; having checked, Leicestershire Police will do both, but bear in mind the aim, if implemented, would be to get people to slow down regardless of the legalities.
